This week has been a productive one and the beginnings of the degree show is starting to emerge. New paintings have started and the sketchbook has come back into use. I missed deeply using a sketchbook last term, it enables me to play with layering and collage in a private manner away from the fear of the board. I’ve taken elements from my video work and have collaged them together to create a new way of looking at them in a two dimensional format.  I’ve began to extend these out of the sketchbook and into reality on much larger surfaces and board widths. The paintings hopefully combine my new found interests in bright colours, with the more abstract forms found within the work to create paintings that contain layers and energy, that morph into something more than just form but into sculpture. The paintings combine objects on top that I have nailed in to add dimension to the surface of the board creating  a more textured approach to sculpture as a whole. Through experimenting with new forms of material such as Oil paint, Acrylic and Matt House paint  when combined alongside of new mediums such as Liquin I’ve noticed some interesting layering techniques that have emerged.  The way acrylic sits on top of oil painting is profoundly interesting. It glides over the top enabling a new layer to form. The paint when applied thickly adds an added dimension to the piece, pushing elements backwards and forwards in a constant change in motion. It been a long week where painting has been my key focus. However new video work has came out of painting, which does not often occur, usually video work inspires painting. But through the collages in my sketchbook a new way of looking at video has emerged. Videos that a re more formal, contains more natural elements and appear a lot more meditative in state. Far from my more architectural moving image works.
